Halloween

Have a happy (and low-sugar) Halloween!

October 31, 2008

Hurrah! Halloween is here! I'm looking forward to a fun night of trick-or-treating with my kids, but I'm dreading the question I need to ask myself tomorrow morning: What in blazes are we going to do with all this candy? With the specters of hyperactivity, obesity and tooth decay looming, there's no way I'm letting my kids keep the whole loot for themselves. Once I've let them pick out the  Read more...

Weekend Outlook: October 31st-November 2nd

October 29, 2008

We're in the home stretch of October. So many costumes, so much candy. But because October isn't over yet, and because this Friday is Halloween, your weekend outlook will of course include things to do that are Halloween-related. But not your usual faire of community festivals and storytimes. This weekend there are some really unique events in the area for you and the kids. First, if you are  Read more...

Trick-or-treat hotspots around Silicon Valley

October 28, 2008

Your kid is ready. He's got the costume. He's got the flashlight. He's got the loot bag. All he needs is a place to trick-or-treat. Before you leave your house on the 31st, you'll need to know where all the Halloween Hotspots are, the homes with the spookiest decorations and the overflowing candy bowls. Here is a sample of neighborhoods in the Menlo Park/Palo Alto area that are usually packed  Read more...

Park Day: Grandpa's Pumpkin Patch

October 27, 2008

We spent our weekend in full Halloween prep mode. A costume was decided upon, ordered, and debuted at a party with twenty other pre-schoolers. And even better, we dressed our little sea otter up and took her to Grandpa's Pumpkin Patch in Mountain View. We decided to try out Grandpa's because the thought of heading over the mountains into Half Moon Bay to visit one of the coastal patches  Read more...

Weekend fun: Menlo Park's Halloween Hoopla

October 24, 2008

There are so many Halloween events this weekend, it's literally impossible to attend all of them. This year, as always, we're picking the Menlo Park Halloween Hoopla on Saturday, October 25. The fun starts with a costume parade through downtown Menlo Park. Families gather at Burgess Park at around 11:45, where parade volunteers hand out balloons and get the parade going by noon. It's a  Read more...

The simple joys of Halloween

October 23, 2008

My kids really enjoy their busy Halloween social schedule (which is a good thing, seeing as I'm crazy about Halloween and drag them to as many events as possible). But for some children, all the raucus parties, sugary treats and scary costumes cause way too many meltdowns. You may decide that one Halloween event -- or just trick-or-treating on the 31st -- is enough. You can still have fun  Read more...

Frightfully fun events around Silicon Valley

October 21, 2008

Alfie groaned when he came home one day and saw skeletons lining the fireplace mantel. "It's only September 28, and you're decorating for Halloween already". "I know it's early, dear, but October is my hands-down favorite month of the year, and I like to get into the spirit of things as soon as possible". As I patiently explained to him, when else will I find the time to glue all those litle  Read more...

Pumpkin picking at Lemos Farm

October 17, 2008

Pumpkins, pumpkins, we love pumpkins Pumpkins, pumpkins, Halloween pumpkins Pupmkins, pumpkins, we love pumpkins In the pumpkin patch -- Barney Much as his singing grates on my nerves, the purple dinosaur is right. Who doesn't love pumpkins? They're healthy, yummy and fun. You could plan a whole October's worth of kids' activities around pumpkins. Bake'em, cook'em, eat'em, decorate'em ,  Read more...

Weekend Outlook: October 17th-19th

October 15, 2008

Looking back at my Weekend Outlook entries for the past few months I notice that we are really and truly privileged in this area to have almost weekly street fairs of some kind or another. I keep highlighting them because I love to walk them, to experience my town, or my neighbor's town, in full spectacle. But perhaps you aren't the street fair type. Perhaps you've been crying out for me to  Read more...
