Art: Ink and Paper

Before Kindergarten....

January 27, 2009

I have three and a half years. Three and a half years until my daughter starts kindergarten. In days that's over 1300. Minus the weekends that leaves about 950. 950 weekdays until there are no more weekdays. Until all of what used to be our days become school days, days apart. So. Time to start planning. What shall we do with our precious time? What ought we do? What can we not  Read more...

Weekend Outlook: January 2nd-4th

December 31, 2008

Happy New Year to All! 2009 is already shaping up to be a great year and it hasn't even started yet. "How can that be?" you ask. And I'm glad you asked, because it gives me a segue into the first Weekend Outlook of 2009 (or the last one of 2008, depending on your point of view). On Friday how about taking the under-3 tot to KidzArt for their "Squiggles to Grins" art class from 10am  Read more...

Weekend Outlook: September 19th-21st

September 16, 2008

Another week, another weekend. This weekend I'm sticking close to the Peninsula, looking into a museum, a festival, and a storytime. Friday: From 11am to 4pm the Museum of American History in Palo Alto will be featuring their Music to One's Ears exhibit, a showcase of instruments in orchestras and in the home throughout musical history. I'm a pretty musical guy, and I hope my daughter  Read more...

Weekend Outlook: September 5-7

September 03, 2008

Heading into this first weekend of what always seems to be the Fall to me my thoughts turn from the beach and pool and cooling off to other great activities for us here in the Valley. Although we'll be hitting the pool many more times before the month is out, it isn't our "go to" move now. So if you are like us and want to get out and do something beyond just soaking your head in the sprinlker  Read more...

Weekend Outlook 8/29-8/31

August 27, 2008

Another week, another weekend. Here are some things you can do with your pre-schooler during this, the last weekend of the month, and what feels like the last weekend of the summer. Friday: In the morning you can enjoy a storytime at the Barnes & Noble in the Pruneyard . This store also offers a pajama story time at 7pm if your kid can stay up that late. Erin can, but she's inherited her  Read more...

Weekend Head's Up: August 22-24

August 20, 2008

Another new feature here at Being Savvy Silicon Valley is a look at the weekend ahead. Every Wednesday I'll post some fun activities for you and your pre-schooler to enjoy. This weekend... Friday: This friday Opal'z in Palo Alto is hosting a "Make your own lip balm" workshop for the kids. They'll learn about textures and fragrances, as well as a little elementary chemistry. Where are the Dads? #1 Increasing your geek factor

June 26, 2008

If you are an at-home dad what activities can you do with your kid that will be great for him, but also allow you to interact with other dads out there in the Silicon Valley? From time to time I'll be writing about these secret locales and what you can do, either as a dad or as a mom with a partner who is looking for some ideas. This week the theme is "Increasing your geek  Read more...

The Littlest Picasso

June 11, 2008

On those rare occasions that we have to take advantage of a day care center near Emily's office we are sent home with a day sheet that details things like how much she ate and when, diaper changes, and naps. It also includes a small picture that shows Erin playing or participating in some activity. And more often than not these activities are little art projects. Just before  Read more...

Just down the road

June 02, 2008

Living on the Peninsula means that there is always something to do. Like mowing the lawn, or attending a neighborhood don't build a reservoir in my park meeting, or figuring out new and exciting ways to give money to Stanford University. Luckily, whoever invented the Peninsula also invented places like Half Moon Bay, San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Fairfield. What you  Read more...

Turning her into an art snob

May 29, 2008

We are very lucky here on the Peninsula. We are just steps away from one of the few collections of Rodin's best-known sculptures. On the Stanford campus there is a very nice museum, the Cantor Arts Center , and located just outside the west entrance is a Rodin Sculpture Garden. Many of the pieces in the garden are larger versions of sculptures that are carved into the huge Gates of Hell,  Read more...
