Weekend Outlook: January 16th-18th
January 14, 2009
This weekâ??s Weekend Outlook is in honor of a very special occasion: My 10th Anniversary!
Wowâ?¦it seems like only yesterdayâ?¦
Anyway, my wife and I are running away together for the weekend and I thought this would be a great opportunity to help you plan a few fun things to do with your own partner, as you dump the kids with a relative, babysitter, or stranger you find at the gas station (please donâ??t do this). And since you donâ??t want to run away around the block, and maybe youâ??d like to stay somewhere within easy driving distance (particularly if youâ??ve actually left the kids with that dude from the gas station) how about pretending that you are running away to San Francisco for the weekend?
So, here are some things you and your partner might enjoy on a quick weekend getaway.
On Friday Loudon Wainwright III is playing at the Great American Music Hall at 8pm. Loudon is probably most famous among parents (dads in particular) for his rendition of â??Daughterâ??, featured in the film â??Knocked Up.â?? I love that song. It really, really speaks to fathers with little girls and I canâ??t believe Iâ??m not going to San Francisco this weekend. Have fun without me.
On Saturday after you spend the day eating chocolate at Ghirardelliâ??s or doing a double-decker bus tour, stay out and walk the Haight on the Haunted Haight Walking Tour. The Haight during the day is weird. The Haight at night must be weirder. Imagine the ghost of Harvey Milk still haunting the storefront he used to own (can you tell I just saw â??Milkâ???) The walking tour starts at 7pm, so have an early dinner and possibly lose it as you quake with fear, or have a late dinner and try to muster an appetite after you hear all the gruesome details of the Haightâ??s past.
And on Sunday take a cooking class at Sur La Table and learn how to create some fantastic breakfasts. You will owe it to your kids once you get home and they found out how much fun you had running away for a little while.
Enjoy your weekend, folks. I know Iâ??m going to enjoy mine.
